Isn’t this a moot issue already? Universal said today that it, too, is going the Blu-ray-only route. In so many words:

While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray

Moot because Toshiba had said earlier today that it was pulling out of the HD DVD business, handing the high-def disc “victory” to Blu-ray and Sony.

No details other than that now, like how this affects already-authored HD DVDs yet to be released, but expect Hollywood to go all out in the coming days to further distance itself from HD DVD.

It’s amazing how one studio’s decision carried so much weight, completely changing the landscape of that phony war.

woodipodcase.jpgWhile these iPod Touch cases aren’t the most pocketable or practical cases out there, they’re beautiful and very special enough to warrant sharing. Handcrafted from cedar and mahogany, they feature really lovely detailing and look to be really high quality. They range in price from $31 to $80 and come in a variety of styles. The version above is carved out of a single, solid piece of sustainable-grown mahogany, which is a large step up from whatever plasticky crap you currently wrap your iPod in. webastoparkingheate%20GI.jpgThe winter might bring with it romantic comedies featuring Hugh Grant, but the downside is the drop in temperature. Fortunately, the Webasto Thermo Top E Parking Heater allows users to send a text message to a vehicle where it is installed, which then kicks it into action, ensuring your car is warm to the touch when you get in. The self-contained unit uses a tiny amount of fuel, and can also be activated by voice or remote control. The heater outputs 4.2kW for a maximum of 60 minutes at a time. Sure, that would keep you from hanging like a brass monkey, but the $1,695 price tag seems a little on the hefty side to us. Remember; it’s not cold if it’s free cold, whatever that means. chemistry_r.jpgSome really smart researchers at Penn State have created a device that mimics the photosynthesis process that plants use to strip energy from sunlight and water. Their solar cell is super inefficient right now (the researchers have to help the reaction along a bit) but they say that with time and effort they may get to a level of efficiency (10-15%, which means nothing to me) that could provide a “clean source of hydrogen fuel from water and sunlight.”

Sounds good to me. I can’t stand my current solar-powered water splitter, it only works at like 7% efficiency on a good day. Come on, I need to get my zeppelin in the air!
