OK, so its not quite as sensational as it sounds— UK scientists have been trying to simulate conditions near the event horizons that shroud black holes, and they’ve cleverly simulated a horizon using pulses of light in a special optical fiber. So, no disastrous gravity well was made and the world didn’t suddenly end with a horrible crunch. But they did create an analog of a black hole that helped them understand some of the weird and whacky physics that goes on near real ones.

The team actually made “completely harmless” black hole and white hole horizons in pairs, at a rate of 80 million a second, by piling up and stretching out ultrashort light pulses in the modified optical fiber. They even detected blue-shifting effects at the white hole horizons, which is predicted by theory.

Next on their agenda may be examining even more interesting quantum stuff like the radiation predicted by Stephen Hawking in his “black holes ain’t so black” theory. And that’s just cool. [Sciencemag via Wired]

Charge up Greenhouse’s rotating speakers via USB and they give you eight hours’ of sounds when you clip them on to your fifth-gen iPod. With an output of 770mW x 2, the GH-SPA214CC costs $44 and will be out in Japan at the end of the month. They’re a pretty neat way to bug people on public transport. [Impress]

Xbox360%20PC%20GI.jpgThe Financial Times Germany has published a story saying Microsoft will be knocking down the Xbox 360 price on Monday (03/10/08). The price cuts are to take place across Europe and will supposedly see the Xbox 360 Arcade dropped from €280 ($432) to €199 ($307), while the Xbox 360 Pro will apparently be slashed to €299 ($461) from €349 ($538.)

This isn’t the first time we have heard such rumors raging through the tubes, but the Financial Times is, more often than not, a super reliable source. Why do you guys care? Well, if this happens to be true—and we won’t have to wait long to find out—surely the States will see some price cutting goodness shortly thereafter? [I4U]

The Arduino platform has been the basis of some awesome projects in the past, but I have yet to see an application of the technology that is more fun than this Etch-a-Sketch clock. At the beginning of every minute, the device draws out the time in a matter of seconds and then erases it to start the process all over again the next minute. Fan freakin’ tastic. [Make]
