HD-DVD fans who were too busy watching movies on their favorite movie player might have missed the Super Bowl. Luckily, Bandersnatch over on YouTube managed to put up a video of Toshiba’s HD-DVD advert for the Super Bowl.

As most of the HD-DVD proponents can probably guess, the video’s main draw is that it advertises the low prices of HD-DVD players. Whether or not it was effective during the Super Bowl remains to be seen, but the effort expended in making an add for primetime game time should definitely be appreciated by adherents to the currently-beleaguered high-def format.

Shaun of the Dead - Image 1If you’re a fan of HD-DVD, then we’ve got something you may want to hear. We’ve just learned that Amazon.com has halved the prices of 100 HD-DVD movie titles. At 50 percent off, you can start picking up your fair share of movies, if you happen to have an HD-DVD player, that is.

The majority of the titles, which include everything from American Gangster to Shaun of the Dead, now cost US 14.95, which is around the same price you’d pay for a standard definition title.

In any case, Amazon has noted that this is a limited-time offer, so you may want to stop reading and just head on over to Amazon for the goods.

ADV Films logo - Image 1Rumors from the frontlines of the format wars: according to reports from ICv2, anime distributor ADV Films (or AD Vision) has chosen to go for the Blu-ray format for future anime releases in high definition. Of course, if this rings true a good number of anime titles comes with ADV’s move.

According to ICv2, information regarding ADV’s move came from a “highly placed source at the company.” Additionally, it was noted that ADV’s newer titles will be released in HD first, rather than its older anime. If so, release dates of the newer anime will subsequently be pushed back since they would have to be given the high def treatment.

Other anime publishers like FUNimation and Bandai Visuals are still on the fence regarding which format to release future HD anime. With ADV’s rumored move, will the other two go ahead and choose their respective formats?

We’ll keep you posted on this one. For now, stay tuned.

Nand flash memory chip developed by Micron Technologies, Inc. - Image 1Weighing in at 8 gigabits of single-level celled (SLC) high speed NAND technology, Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc. has announced the development of the world’s fastest NAND product to date.

The new SLC high speed NAND can read data of up to 200 megabytes per second, with a write speed of up to 100 megabytes per second. The new NAND more than doubles the read and write speed of today’s conventional NAND products which is limited to only 40 MB/s for reading data and less than 20 MB/s for writing data.

Intel’s and Micron’s new 8 Gb SLC high speed NAND is currently being sampled to major OEMs and controller manufacturers and is expected to be mass produced by the second half of 2008. Bill Lauer, senior director of marketing for Micron’s memory group had this to say on their new product:

With the new capabilities designed into high speed NAND, the performance benefits will be visible to the consumer, allowing them to experience a faster way of transferring digital content between devices such as computers, digital cameras, MP3 players and cell phones.

This definitely spells good news for techies who want to pack in more data on to their favored digital storage devices, while still keeping everything intact without the fear of any data loss in between compressed files.
